“A Fly on the Wall, A Bartender’s Perspective” is an interesting book by a professional bartender. It includes stories of his take on the people he serves and the people he works for. The book by AJ Rothberg is quite funny and is an enjoyable read. Not all the people that come in his bar are the most upstanding and he tells tales that are really interesting. He worked in many locations and for many different people. He includes recipes for special drinks. This memoir also includes his other interests such as ski patrol and cooking”

“A Fly on the Wall, A Bartender’s Perspective” is a very funny book, occasionally a bit on the salty side but quite enjoyable. The author, AJ Rothberg, has been a bartender in many different bars for years and has seen it all. He tells how he gets rid of troublesome customers and how to handle those that insist they can drive home when he can tell they can’t. Without giving names, he describes some of the bosses he had that were not always nice people. You will enjoy the other interests he has such as ski patrol. Rothberg tells of some of the cases that he has helped while in this capacity. He is good at describing the “how to” of making special mixed drinks as well as how to cook with alcohol. I especially like the recipe for steak marinated with whiskey and other such good stuff.”

“I just finished AJ’s book – wow, is there anything he doesn’t know how to do? I loved the bear stories – I’ve always wondered what I’d do when hiking if I encountered a bear. Luckily, I haven’t! And, I thought the last chapter was a great wrap-up. But, I think my fav would have to be the very last line – I’m still chuckling about it!”

This is an engaging set of stories about a job that I had never considered in much depth. Reading AJ’s descriptions, I began to reconsider some of my encounters with bartenders in times past. I have become enlightened. You’ll love this book!

What a fun and easy read! A perfect beach read. Learned a lot about what a bartender sees and what he experiences through the lives of his colorful customers. Very enjoyable.

here’s a small taste;

Chapter 1                         Everyone Counts

I started bartending back in the late eighties as a way to pick up a few extra dollars and very quickly started to learn this was actually a very complex job. Serving drinks to local drunks is what most people think of when they think of their favorite local bartender or watering hole. In general the easiest thing a bartender has to do is serve drinks. Much harder parts of the job include always trying to be nice to people you can’t stand, or trying to help ten people at one time, or more, when no one wants to wait. Sometimes it’s being the “eye in the sky” “watchdog” or a “lookout.” From time to time it has meant being the drug dealer, the cop, the first responder EMT. It has sometimes called for the responses of a friend, co-worker, tax payer, politician, entertainer, or business consultant. All of this while having to remember at least a hundred different drink recipes.  You have to be an accountant, salesmen and psychologist. Stock boy, security, food server and repair man. None of this was first explained when I first entered the field some 20 plus years ago. Even after a course from the Bartending Academy of America no one ever really wants to tell you exactly what you might have gotten yourself into. Remember most bartenders in America are making tip wages meaning usually around $5 per hour and are counting on tips to make their living. Keep in mind almost every job mentioned above pays more.  A good bartender will read each and every customer. Like the cop on the beat you “size-up” every client that walks up to your bar. Some people actually just came to talk. Some don’t want to talk at all, just drink. Some are just waiting. What they’re waiting for can vary greatly and again some want to talk about it and some don’t. A lot of people don’t know why they are there at all and are looking for someone, anyone, to tell them what they should drink and how many they should have and why they are there or what’s the best way to have a good time. Your job is to figure out what makes them happy enough to tip you well. Your job is also to keep to yourself whatever it was you may have overheard being discussed at your bar. And most importantly try to keep your ass out of whatever sling is headed your way next.
Sambuca was a favorite drink of the mafia back in the day. It was a bartender that introduced the coffee beans as a garnish and they came with a hidden message. The typical Sambuca was served with three coffee beans, if a bartender overheard that “Joey” was “gonna get wacked”, Joey’s next Sambuca would only have two coffee beans in it, quietly letting him know what was in store for him without ever saying a word. Again the consummate politician. I have from time to time come across people who you would never recognize who threw down fat tips after just a short visit while others you would recognize as celebrities or politicians left without leaving a tip at all. Bottom line you really just never know how people are or more importantly how they are going to be after a few cocktails. In the reality of business you have to extend yourself to everyone the biggest difference is again the booze. Even cops are scared of mean drunks. Everyone starts out even and it’s up to the bartender to direct traffic and pay attention. That again is a lot easier said than done by most.

I am writing this collection of stories that I have gathered in the twenty plus years I have been a bartender because first of all I am no longer a bartender and secondly as a fly on a wall in cities in America like Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philly, New York, Denver there is lots you can learn if you’re paying attention.  Almost everything in the world you could think of is discussed on a daily basis in the bars around the world. Bankers, actors, escapees from prison, world investment brokers, insurance agents, Politicians have all done “business” while sitting at my bar. Rock stars, TV personalities, movie stars all a little different with a good buzz on. Respectable business owners on nights when “respectable” might not be the best choice of words to describe what was going on.  I am not going to use names as much as I can but instead references like rock singer or famous Republican Senator will be used because I feel that it’s the pretense of the thought or action that needs to be brought out here and not just a collection of bad people and name calling. After it all, the things I have learned as that fly on the wall, one thing is always constant, every one counts. You never really know who someone is. Keep yourself as neutral as possible; keep your ears open and your mouth shut as much as possible. Now that alone for me has taken quite a bit of time to figure out and ask my wife and she’ll tell you that I still haven’t gotten that one down yet.

Come find out what everyone is talking about.
